Mining Notes.
Mining matters are still in a somewhat dormant state just now, but in the near future we are expecting a revival. W ork in the big tunnel is progressing; a few prospectors are at work. at Quartzville; the work of conveying the ore from the Tui to the Rev J. Campbell’s battery will shortly commence, operations for treating the same will be started as soon as possible. Messrs Coutts, Inspector of Mines, andc McKay, Government Geologist, : paid a visit, to the various mining properties in the Te Puke last week. • These gentlemen expressed themselves favourably as to the properties of Te Puke as a gold-bearing country. Mr McKay thinks that the auriferous belt extends for a considerable distance north and south, and is probably several miles wide. The quartz is ; similar to that obtained at Waihi, and the belt has nothing in common with tho main range.. ,' v A crushing of ten tons, of quartz and , of picked stone from the Bun ker’s Hill mine returned 83. ounces of : gold. The London Times is quoted as : authority for the statement that the ; result of the first season’s gold washing at Klondyke is estimated; at ; £5,000.000, sterling. Eeefton, Saturday.
Gold returns for the week: Alpine,. 131 oz: amalgam .from 260 tons,, top. plates. Boiler Dredge, 490 z. 14dwt gold for six days.
