Gordon Settlement Notes.
(From our own Correspondent.)
Welcome rain at last! Yes, the rain has come, and the settlers luok happy. Most of them were so delighted to see a really good shower that they went out purposely to enjoy the novel sen*, nation of getting a thoroughly good wetting. The grass and crops of all kinds are looking a great deal better after the fall of the refreshing rain. Not only was vegetation suffering from want of rain, but water was becoming very scarce in the - district, so the change in the weather is acceptable to all. Our road contractors may not feel quite pleased to see any break in the fine weather just now, but the Gordon men (and women) beiug all true liberals, instinctively believe in the greatest good the greatest number, and therefore cordially welcomed the steady downpour At a meeting of the Gordon S. S. Association, held in the school-room on the evening of the 26th ult., Mr J. Orr presiding, it was resolved to write requesting the Government to grant a small subsidy towards completing the Gordon-Waharoa road. It was decided also to ask the various local bodies to join the G.B.S. Association in contributing towards the cost of the work in question. It is to be hoped that something practical will be done in this matter, as the closing of this road would prove very awkward for all concerned. The settlers loudly complain of what they consider as thpir member's want of energy in regard to this and to other matters of interest to the Gordon district, so that it might not be amiss, perhaps, if that gentlemen delivered in this settlement a prosessional address on political and municipal topics of current importance. It is certain that he would be favored by a Urge and attentive audience.
It is rumored that the Premier will soon attend a native meeting at Huntly : let us hope that a great effort will be made to induce him to deliver a political address at Te Aroha. Our settlement still continues to make steady progress, there being at present two new h mses going up in the district, the one for Mr J. Oir and the other for Mr Maisey, Mr Tonge and Mr J. Brooks respectively being the contractors. Mr Mafsey and his family will be a very desiroble acquisition to the Settlement.
The drawing for the various sections in the Wairere Block will take place during the present month; and it would seem highly desirable that the Land Board should take such steps as will prevent any section being drawn for speculative purposes.
