Te Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1898. END OF THE GREAT STRIKE.

After rejecting by a very large majority the proposals of the recent conference, the Engineers have accepted the provisional arrangement in regard to the conditions proposed by the em ployers for the management of their works; 28,588 votes being registered in favour of the acceptance of the conditions, and 13,727 against. There is no impartial tribunal in England to which the opponents in these great industrial wars can appeal to determine judicially what is fair and what is practicable. Hitherto the only way of testing this question has been by the barbarous method of “ the strike,” and according to the Hoard of Trade returns, their are fr»m 500 to 1100 labour disputes in England every year. Surely, as a contemporary says, one result, at any rate, of this latest, most extensive, and prolonged strike will be a more earnest attempt on the part of the rulers of the nation to frame laws that will save the country from a species of civil war which is so fraught with disaster.
