Ix is estimated that the British en * gineers on strike have lost £2,0£10-,QOO in wages, while the funds of the Engineers’ Society have been depleted to the extent of £600,000. The Canadian Government have started a scheme for training fisherman in the winter months in order to fit them to become naval reservists. The Japanese Government appear to be hastening oh their shipbuilding programme in view of serious complications in the ‘Far East. One of their cruisers has just been launched at San Francisco, and the launching of another is expected to take place in a few days. Anarchy still reigns in the unfortunate island of Crete. A panic at present prevails in Heraklion, owing to the violent behaviour of Moslem mobs, who are terrorising the city. The excitement over the Dreyfus ease has extended to Algiers, in North Africa, where serious anti-Jewish riots have taken place.
