ECHOES FROM EUROPE.
The speech of the ' Eight Hon. A. J. Balfour, Chief Lord of the Treasury, does not, unfortunately, throw much light upon the attitude of the Government in regard to the serious questions which are cropping up in various parts of the world, and which threaten the interests of Eugland. The Dreyfus case is still exciting great interest in Prance. The official enquiry into the charges made against Count Esterhazy, who is accused by the friends of Dreyfus 1 of being the writer of the fatal document which led to the condemnation of the French captain, has resulted in his acquittal. The whole matter; however, seems to be left in as great uncertainty as ever. It is reported that the American Senate is secretly discussing a proposal for the annexation, of Hawaii. The floods in Queensland are proving very serious. A large part of Brisbane is under water. ! .
