ECHOES FROM EUROPE.
Tmr remarkable and sinister development of Western activity in the Far East is not being regarded with indifference by the British Government. In a speech at Lincoln, Mr Chaplin, President of the Local Government Board, referred to what has taken place in that part of the world, and announced that Lord Salisbury would leave nothing undone to secure British interests in China. The race for Africa continues with unabated eagerness. The French have, it is asserted, occupied the course of the Niger from Say to Boussa, a territory claimed by Great Britain, while the latter has occupied Salamia, in the Gold Coast hinterland which Germany was suspected of having designs upon. • The departure of reinforcements for the Soudan is being hurried on with great activity. The object is no doubt to enable Sir Herbert Kitchener to push on to Khartoum. The railway is to he extended to El Damer.
