Observing that New Zealand is the third highest gold-producing country in the world, and that the yield of gold' from New Zealand was worth nearly one million sterling in 1893. The London Times remarks :—“ The increasing output in the Waihi and other scientifically conducted mines prove that the gold deposits of that Island colony§are as permanent and amenable to treatment a 3 those of Western Australia. MR M. DAVITT IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, Saturday. Mr Michael Davitt arrived this afternoon, and was met by Sir P. Buckley, the Hon. Mr Blake, Dr Grace and other leading, men. Later in the day a formal welcome was tendered to him at the Occidental Hotel. It was intended to present him with a purse of sovereigns, bufc he declined. Representatives were present from the National Federation, the labour bodies, tho women’s associations, etc. The speeches were of the briefest description, and were confined to expressions of welcome.

STEALING STAMPS

Wellington, Nov. 25. For some time past the telegraph authorities have suspected that stamps used on telegraph messages have been stolen after the message was sent to the store. They are said to have been disposed of as far as Sydney and Mel bourne., Two young men were arrested on. a charge of taking them. One, Alex. G. Fabian, is employed in the stores, and the other, Bernard Watts, lives in the same house with him. Some of the stamps were found in the house. ✓ .
