EXPLORATION IN NEW GUINEA .
A PARTY’S TERRIBLE SUFFERINGS. Thursday Island, November 23. News has been received of the great suffering of an exploring expedition in German New Guinea. The party was led by a well known German naturalist sent out for the purpose of exploration, and the commandant of the police in German New (Guinea. After two months’ rations were exhausted the party lived on grass and water. They were attacked -by a scourge,of poisonous flies aad leeches, and the flesh of all festered, the sufferings being terrible. When all were in an emaciated condition they decided to make for British New Guinea for succour, but in attempting to cross a river on a raft the two leaders and a number of natives were“drowned. The survivors had great difficulty in sustaining life, and were almost famished. They made their way through a dense jungle towards the coast, where they were met and rescued by' a friendly tribe. One died from weakness and others are unlikely to recover?
