SHOCKING TRAGEDY IN WELLINGTON. A WIPE SHOT BY HER HUSBAND. THE MAN COMMITS SUICIDE > Wellington, Wednesday. A sad tragedy is reported from Newtown. Isaiah Fake, a bricklayer, aged about 51, living in Drummond-street, after a difference with his wife this morning, drew a revolver and shot her through the neck. The bullet entering the right side of the windpipe, came out a,t the back of the neck. Fake was married only a few months ago, his wife being a Mrs Skinner, from whom her husband secured a divorce on the grounds of adultery with th' deceased. Fake had been known to be of eccentric habits for some time, and, his wife quite recently spoke of obtaining policb; protection. Mrs Fake was removed to the Hospital. ■ ' Later." ■ Mrs Fake, late this evening, was progressing satisfactorily, and is expected to recover. SUICIDE AT NAPIER . Napier; Wednesday. Joseph Reuben Ellessley, about 35, hanged himself to-day in an out-build-iugadjoining his residence at Hastings. The deceased had been in regular employment at Tamoana, but came out of Napier Hospital recently, and ' since then, has been in a despondent state. He leaves a widow a five children. DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM - Wellington, Wednesday. Mrs Jessie Short, of Palmerston North, a patient in the hospital, died under chloroform, administered while undergoing an operation fdran internal complaint. Four medical gentlemen were present. RAILWAY ACCIDENT AT NAPIER ' Napier, Wednesday. A man named Walter Willoughby, a- carpenter, attempted to eross the line in front of .the late train from Danevirke. He was knocked down and very, seriously injured* He was removed to the hospital.
A FATAL ACCIDENT Marton, Wednesday. A fatal accident occurred hereyesterday, on Mr T. H. Bredin’s property, near Rata, the other side of the Rangitikei River. Two brothers were fencing on the cliff overlooking the river, and R. Bredin, who was standing on the edge, slipped down the cliff. Search was made,? but no trace of the man could b i got. He was either buried under tons of earth or drowned in the river. . / COROMANDEL WARDEN’S COURT Coromandel, Novemberl2. A case which occupied a good deal of time was that in regard to the Invicta surplus ground. An important legal point was involved. Regan, f w whom Mr Baume appeared, applied for the surplus ground. Ilis application was opposed “by Peebles, and on this point judgment was reserved. The case was argued to-day between Messrs Baume and Parr, but the decision, is not-yet given. The Karaka No. t block.was to have been, argued to-day, but the other cases occupied the. time of the Court. Applicants have lodged £lOlB, representing about '2OOO acres," and the Warden .intends to hold a preliminary; inquiry.
