Paeroa, Friday. Now that the Te Aroha Railway is almost completed there is every likelihood of the line being c mtinued from here to Waihi. Mr Douglas, an behalf of a powerful English Syndicate, has made an offerto the Government to carry out the scheme, if. the latter are willing to assist the Syndicate* in getting land, etc. The idea is to cany the proposed line through Karangahake, Owharoa, and close to Waitekauri and' on to Waihi. This line should be of great advantage to the mining centres through which it will pass. The tender of Mr J. McDonnell, of this place, has been accepted for the erection of the new Hotel at Waihi, the price being £2350. Efforts are being made to establish a Telephone Exchange here. The National Bank have purchased the busines place now occupied o by Mr Claxton, tailor, and intend .erecting a two story building. Plans, etc., are in couree of preparation. The busines of Mr Hague Smith, managed by Mr T. Lawlete, is also being made into a two story building, and already presents quite an imposing appearance. Mr Thornton is making rapid strides with the scenery, etc , of the Criterion Theatre, and expects to put the finishing touch on very shortly. The Boarding House next to the Wesleyan Church, under the management of Mrs Beeche, late of Reefton. is now open, and affords every comfort to the travelling public. Mr Power, proprietor of the All Nations Hotel, is having a large and spacious hotel built opposite the Commercial Hotel and corner of the Thames - Tauranga roads. . Messrs Pink and O’Hara being the contractors, the price is £BSO.
Mr J. W. Shaw, who has lately taken over the Commercial Hotel, intend to shortly add to his already commodious building, so that altogether the carpenters are having a very busy time of it. The mining boom has somewhat slackened down within the last day or. two, awaiting, no-doubt, completion of the many surveys, as in some cases the area pegged out far exceeds that applied for. In some cases where 30 acres have been applied for, as many as 100 have been pegged off, so that when the surveys are completed, no doubt, there will ,be a rush to peg the surplus ground. ■_
