MR . J. B. McEWAN GOVERNMENT DAIRY EXPERT at TE AROHA WEST .

Ox Saturday morning last Mr J, -8., McEwan, the chief Government Dairy Expert, accompanied by Mr Farley, manager for Messrs Reynolds and Go., visited the creamery at To Aroha West, . -

Mr McEwan inspected the crermery and its mode of work, and was satisfied v.ith what he saw, and complimented the suppliers, on the nice clean manner in which the milk was delivered at the factory. When all the milk had been received and weighed, Mr McEwan proceeded to tost the. same with the Babcock ester, the result, of which we give below! We also give the result of the day previous, which was tested by Hr Melville, tho manager:

Average, 3.4. ' *■' • " •• “ • V • Mr McEwan advocated a. weekly test in preference to the daily tost as at present carried on by the wish, of the settlers. It would be less trouble for the manager, and the average at the week end must be the same if samples were taken/daily, and in this way the testing, would/be. better for the suppliers and more satisfactory to the proprietors. Mr ; McEwan does not favour tho proprietory system, but advocates the. Canadian system which is on co-operative lines, i.e., the suppliers manage their own business, but pay a firm with a central factory, a price per lb for manufacturing, suppliers take all risks of. profit and loss.. Mr McEwan said, that paying fqr milk according to the butter, fat it contains was doubtless, the very,, best method, But so long as the business was managed as at present there would always boa feeling of suspicion on tho part of suppliers;, no matter- how.- hone it the proprioiors, or cartfully the work was done. He had no doubt that the Dairying industry in Now Zealannl. would dove bp-on the lines of che.C na liansystom. Tho future success o'f New Zealand dairying depended upon the co-oper-ation | aud support of the suppUers; managers aud -manufacturers miy be skilled, but unless the settlers' kept the best cows,- and att .-n.ded to them in a thorough practical’ manner wo could not-hopefo succeed. With* reference to tlie testing, Mr McEwan said the best -of cows will vary in the quality of milk, climatic in/luonces, handling, and other causes, tell upon the/ milk and this will be shown in the testing.

Mr McEwanVivas pleaseff with, the class of cows he had seen in the district, afid also thought the locality was well suited for'daii-yiiig.. Several questions re testing milk, were asked by suppliers, aud satisfactoii'y answered by the iuspoctor.
