A LONELY DEATH Napieu, Monday,, The Australia, wjiich called ia at Mercury Bay on the way from Auckland, brings news of a curious affair. A party of men were drinking in Mercury Bay about a week ago, and left for their work in the countoy. One man, named Julius Anderson, a German,, seemed ill, and was left on the side of the track by his companions about nine miles out. One of them returning five days afterwards found him dead where he was left. The result of the inquest, was. not known when the Australia left. TAXING NATIVE LANDS Wellington, Saturday. A deputation of natives waited upon the Coionial Treasurer in regard to the taxing of native lands. They urged that natives should be exempt to the extent of 50 acres per head, and claimed that injustice was 'done them by the valuations placed , upon 1 native lands. The Colonial Treasurer promised that lie would bring the matter before his colleagues, who would seethat no injustice was done the native race. .

THE PRICE OF CYANIDE Wellington, Monday. The Minister of Mines lias for some time past been in communication with the Agent-General respecting the price of cyanide potassium, and in a recent, letter from the Agent-General was enclosed a letter signed by J. A. Barnicoat, a director of Johnston and Sons, Limited, manufacturing chemists, London, offering tb supply cyanide of one hundred per cent, strength at one shilling and threepence per pound, and of 70 per cent, strength at one shilling and a halfpenny per poiml free f.o.b. in London in zinc-liued cases containing two hundredweight.

THE COLONIAL BANK . Dunedin, Monday. The report of the directors of the Colonial Bank for the half-year ending the. 31st of August states that after -Baal ing various provisibns the net profit is £12,985 11s balance, from the previous half-year making a total of £21,636 6s Bd. Deducting the land, income, aud note taxes—£l6s6 3s lOd —there is available £19,988 2s lOd. Pending the result of the negotiations' for the purchase of the Bank the directors dp not at present intend to deal the balance, but to adjourn the general meeting ou the 25th of September to a day in .October, by which time the wishes of the shareholders will be expressed at an emergency meeting shortly to be called.
