THE GOVERNMENT AND THE DAIRY INDUSTRY.

The action of the Government in pre venting an inspection of butter for export to be made at Auckland as last season, is beginning to bear its evil fruit, as the following letters will show : New Zealand Dairy 5 Association, Auckland, September 18, 1895. The Manager, New Zealand Shipping Company, Auckland. Dear sir,—l regret to have to inform you that owing to the unfair action of the Government’s Department of Agriculture, which has, without having giving us any previous notice, failed to continue the Freezing Depot here, we shall not be able to send our expected shipment of butter by your s.s. Tongariro, on October 3. I am using every effort to get this injustice removed, especially as it is through no fault or lack of reasonable foresight on our part. My association’s interests are seriously injured, and thus the whole of our large dairying district is made to suffer. I hope this matter will be righted, and that we shall take up the remaining engagements of the season. In the meantime we are prevented from shipping by the Tongariro as we desired.— Yours faithfully (signed), Wesley Spragg, manager. In consequence of the above letter, the local manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, telegraphed yesterday afternoon to the head office, at Christchurch, as follows“ New Zealand Shipping Company/ September .18, 1895, Christchurch. Tongariro, owing to action of the Government in failing to continue freezing depot here, cannot send/mr ten tons butter. Shippers ask us to help them to have injustice removed, they having carried out engagements to letter on these lines. Last season shipments have always been forwarded by boat connecting with West Coast steamer. — C. V. Houghton, manager, Auckland.
