FATAL FIRE. Otaki, Thursday. Mr John Webber’s house, Otaki, was destroyed by fire yesterday, and Mr Webber, who was one of Wellington’s pioneers, was burned to death. Mr Webber was a labourer, aged 80 years.

VERY SUDDEN DEATH. ' Hamilton, Thursday. An old Hamilton resident, Mr R. IT. Stokes, died suddenly at ten o’clock this morning. Mr Stokes, who was about 62 years of ago, was on the roof of -his verandah painting the front of his house, when he fell forward dead, still remaining on the top of the verandah. He was removed into the house, hnd Dr BreWis was sent for, and was in attendance within fifteen minutes, hut could only pronounce life was extinct.

DEATH BY MISADVENTURE. Wellington, Thursday. At the inquest on James Day, who died in the hospital under chloroform, medical testimony was given that deceased was suffering from mouth disease, and wished to have some teeth extracted. Chloroform was administered by the medical superintendent, in the presence of the dentist, and before the operation an examination was made of Day, hut no abnormal sound in the heart was heard. The post mortem showed that deceased had long- standing brain disease, waxy liver, and spleen, fatty condition of the heart, and disease of the aorta. Evidence was adduced that apart from the operation, any excitement might have caused death. A verdict of death by syncope by misadventure was returned.
