Manchester compares very favourably with London as a distributing centre, and would serve from six to eight millions of people, mostly earning good wages. In all Quarters the people concurred as to tlte splendid possibility of fostering a direct trade with Australia, especially in meat and wool. VIOLENT STORM MANY HOUSES UNROOFED Sydney, September 4. BANK OF NEW ZEALAND PROTEST AGAINST THE CALL London, September 3. The shareholders’ committee of the Bank of New Zealand has convened a. meeting of shareholders for September 16th to protest against the call. They demanded that the Bank shall go into liquidation, and denounce Mr Ward’s statements made in Lundun*
