| THE CATTLE DISEASE. ' Ohaupo, Wednesday. Yesterday Messrs Gilruth, Clifton, and Ross were here ’again in connection with the disease amongst tho cattle, as another of Mr Kusabs’ .beasts was ailing. It was decided to kill it, and Mr Gilruth took a portion of the carcase away for analysis. The farms of Mr Henry Kusabs, Mr D. Turnwall, and Mrs Martyn. have been declared as infected, and no cattle will be allowed to be taken off them in the meantime. Mr Gilruth left again for Auckland by the afternoon train to day.
BRUTAL TREATMENT OP A GIRL. Napier, Wednesday. At the Waipawa S.M. Court, William Merrick, settler, of Waikopiro, was sent to gaol for two months for brutally beating his daughter, aged 13 year. While he thrashed the naked girl, tied to a bed-post, until the blood spurted over the walls, the mother stuffed a towel into her mouth, to prevent her screams being heard by the neighbours. The punishment was inflicted because the girl had run away from home, in consequence of previous illtreatmenj; and starvation.. The girl was handed over to the almoner of the Charitable Aid Board.
THE SEEVRE WEATHER IN THE SOUTH.
Dunedin, Wednesday. } At the Land Board applications were j received for a substantial reduction in | the rental of Morven Hills and Ilowk- | den runs, the grounds in each case I being severe losses of stock, in con--1 sequence of the terrible weather, which renders it impossible that the rent can be paid out of income from the stations. It was stated that in the cnse of Morven Hill it is estimated that 50,000 sheep have perished. The manager at Hawkden anticipates that the whole of the succumbed, although that cannot be definately known until the snow melts.
