FOOTBALL JOTTINGS
[By Drop-Kick.] Our footballers journeyed to Macltaytown on Saturday to play the return match with Karangahake. On arrival on the ground it was found that some of the Te Aroha players failed to put in an appearance, but the team picked several good substitutes, who had come to witness the contest, and who worked hard for the blue and whites. The game resulted, in a win for Te Aroha by 5 points to 3. The try was obtained by 0. Lipsey and was neatly converted by J. Rennick. The try for Karangahake was secured by Keelher. The teams were captained by Rennick and Davis. A football match between Te Aroha and Paeroa will be held in Mr G. Lipsey’s paddock on Saturday afternoon next, 27th inst. The game will no doubt prove an interesting one as the best teams of both clubs will take part in the match. Te Aroha team are as follows :—Full-back, Pococlc ; three-quarter, Gorrie, Pavitt, Gregory; half-back, Keesing, Simmonds; forwards, Rennick (captain), Lewis, Hinton, Cornes, Smardon, ‘William,’ 0. Lipsey, Buchan, Hamilton. Emergencies :—Ngarua, Joe. Napier, Saturday. The third representative match Auckland v. Hawke’s Bay was played here to-day. The first match between these provinces was played in August, 1879, when the Northerners beat Hawke’s Bay on their own ground by 8 to 3; on this day, J 7th August, last year the game between the ?toams ended in a draw; to : day Auckland succeeded in ' making another win by TO points to 3.
The match between Auckland 11. and Northern. WairoaL was played at Potter’s Paddock, E-psora, on Saturday afternoon. The weather was fine, and the attendance very satisfactory, over 8000 persons being on the ground. The game, which was a fast and interesting one, ended in favour of Auckland by 20 points to 15. Ohristohurou, Saturday. The football match, Canterbury v. Wellington, was played to-day at. Lancaster Park ground, which was in good order. The weather was fine, excepting that a cold sou’-wester blew down the field. 2,500 spectators were present, who took a lively interest in the game. The match was net a brilliant exposition of open football ; play being monopolised principally by the forwards,. and hea\y scrimmages were the order of the day. Contrary to expectations, the local forwards heat their heavier opponents, and a tough struggle ensued in favo ir of Canterbury by 6 points to 4,
