AUSTRALIAN SMELTING- COMPANY

London, August 9. The quarter of a million capital issued by the Australian Smelting Company has been over subscribed. It is intended to erect works at Illawarra immediately. The machinery will be capable of treating two hundred thousand tons of sulphides annually. Contracts are out for it, and a portion will bo shipped on Friday. - -

A DASTARDLY OUTRAGE .

Melbourne, August 10. A charge of gelignite, which had been placed in the letter-box office of the Daylesford Advocate, exploded and partially wrecked the building. Fourteen other charges which had not exploded, were found in the building.

WEST AUSTRALIAN PARLIAMENT

Perth, August 10. The Budget estimates the revenue at £1,219,000, and the expenditure at £1,537,000, including £423,000 for public works. A motion, censuring the Government for not proceeding with the Re-distribution of Seats Bill, this session, was negatived by 22. Six of the Opposition voted with the Government.

INQUEST ON THE VICTIMS, Sydney, August 12. The inpuest on -the victims of the Catterthun disaster have begun in Forster. Lanfaer, in his evidence, stated that he was in charge at the time of the vessel striking, the captain being in the chart room He saw the Seal light, hut declined to give the course steered. He did not see the green light, which would indicate danger. He refused to say whether 1 e... altered- the course dux'ing his watch, or what position tie Seal light bore at the time they struck, -v -
