SHOOTING COMPETITION.

On Thursday afternoon last some 34 members of our local Volunteer corp met at the rifle range for the purpose of taking part in the firing competition for Hallenstein Bros’, suit of clothes, ■which was very generously given to the company by that firm to be fired for. Some half-a-dozen other prizes, j given by local tradespeople, etc., were also awarded according to merit. The afternoon proved, a fine one, and quite a number of spectators were present at the butts, who appeared to take great interest in the shooting. The ranges were 400, 500, and 600yds, 7 shots at each (no sighters),'with the Martini Henry rifles, which, as far as accuracy is concerned, is a great iscrnrov‘'~ , '\ c on the old bp***". ~ scores made at the’ different ranges. The'shooting' done by Vols, W. Maingay, Ist; and Hanby, 2nd, being especially good, and is the best firing yet done on the. local range :
