The many friends of Mr Joseph James of Te Aroha West will regret to hear, that he passed over to the great’ majority on Tuesday evening last. , For many years Mr James has been a martyr to asthma and bronchitis, during the present; winter: he has been almost constantly confined to his room. Mr James was an old . Thames miner, ans one of the pioneer settlers in this Upper Thames district, he was widely known and much respected by all who knew him, he leaves a wife and largo family to mourn their loss of husband and father. The interment will, taka place tomorrow afternoon. Never within the memory of the oldest residents in this Thames Valley has there been such' a winter as the, present. The intense cold and long succession of severe frosts make this a memorable I winter? It is very Tough on the young lambs and cattle, but it will do much good in checking insect pests and sweetening the soil, particularly the fallow land. Weasels have now become so numerous in this district (says the Taranaki Herald)-, that hunting the creatures with fox terriers is now a popular pastime. - A party recently obtained as many as six in one day, in the Mangarei district. . : The tariff is not generally accepted. The soft goods men say it is not favourable to the public. On cotton goods especially the duty is too heavy. The perfumery industry will bo prohibited by tho duty of 16s per gallon on essences. The Commission recommend two pence on tea and three pence on kerosene.
' " During the winter months Mr P. Faes' skating and dancing carnival, (which is held in the Public Hall fortnightly) has been well attended by both young and old. The music for the dancing is of a first-class character; while an excellent M.G. is always present. The. skating atone, is a 3ource of attraction: to many,, and some of those who attend are , adepts in the art.
A scientist declares that the fine com.plexion of English girls is due to the fogs which so frequently 'sweep over Albion. Dampness seems to permeate the flesh and keep the skin soft, On the other hand, a dry and sunny climate makes a dry and harsh complexion. The natives of desert count ri :1s are a' living proof of the latter half of this statement.
