THE LOTTERY SCHEME ; : V Dunedin, Monday. A public meeting, called by the Ministers’ Association, was held in the City Hall to-night. It was only, mod-' erately attended Professor Salmon presided. A resolution was passed,, ‘ That ,in the opinion of this meeting Parliament should not give authority to hold the lottery of the Estates Company’s assets, as the lottery would bo inimical to the moral and economic interests of the people, would tend to foster the active gambling spirit which already exists, and would be -contrary to the best legislation of the day.’ It was decided to forward the resolution to the Government, and the members for the city and suburbs. A MAN BURIED ALIVE Dunedin, Monday. James Cowan, who was killed at Gibbstown, was going for hi 3 jdinner which his little girl had brought, when the ground under his feet gave way, and he fell into old workings. About four hours elapsed before the men could dig him, out, by which time life was extinct. He leaves a widow, and eight young children. CLAIM FOR .£IO,OOO Ihercargill, Monday. John James Meikle is forwarding a petition to Parliament, asking for £IO,OOO compensation for false imprisonment for sheep-stealing, and that his name be removed from the police records of the colony.
ACCIDENTALLY SHOT . . ; Napier, Monday. A youth named Rigley shot himself accidently at Waikaremoana.
