PARLIAMENTARY JOTTINGS
.The second session of the twelfth Parliament of New Zealand was opened at half-past two on Thursday afternoon by the Governor in person. There was a very large attendance of ladies Everything went off without the slightest hitch. In the absence of toir Maurice O’Rorke, Mr Guinness undertook tbe duties of the Speaker. The weather was fine, and a large crowd gathered in the vicinity of Parliament Buildings during the afternoon. Mr E. T. Dufuur was present at the opening ceremony. He is in Wellington on business. The House is again petitioned b}' Mr J. H. Field,"'•of. Auckland, as to certain grievances in connection with a Government -printing contract. ' T In view of tlie proposal contained in the Governor’s Speech to increase the number of Ministers, Mr E. M. Smith is urging that the strong claims of the North for another representative in the Cabinet should not be overlooked
The prosecutions under the Shops Act is the subject.of a question to be asked by Mr Buchanan. Notice has been given of an Elective Executive Bill aud a Referendum Bill.
.Sir Robert Stout will re-introduce his Homes Security Bill of last session, protecting.a man’s home from seizure for debt.
The attack upon the totalisator Bill is being renewed by Mr Carnell, of Napier. A Bill providing for an elective Governor is to be introduced
A motion is to be brought on to prohibit the House from sitting after midnight. l)r Newman -is again advocating legislation to provide for the admission of women of Parliament.
