DAIRY INDUSTRY.
Some time since tbe Minister for Agriculture cabled to tbe Agent-General asking for information as to and branding butter exported from New Zealand. An answer has been received from the Agent-General enclosing letters from experts. For himself, Sir W. B. Perceval says, ‘' I am inclined to think thatjgit is at _present somewhat premature to express any decided opinion as to the effect of grading and branding. This season the supply of butter has been so much in excess of the demand, and the prices have been so low, that the time has not been a very opportune one for testing the vaue of grading and branding. It may be claimed, however, that the {infrequency of complaints as to quality has arisen from greater care in the manufacture and shipment of butter. I still' hold very firmly to the opinion I formed on my arrival here as to the great value of an officer here to inspect produce on arrival, who would work in conjunction with the^ASTi oll !' turai Department in the Colony. If the Government decide to appoint an inspector in this country ho should be selected here and have special qualifications for the position. In my opinion it is extremely hazardous to appoint a man from the colony, as special knowledge of these markets in addition to great tact and experience is required to properly perform the duties of th is position.’ The experts corroborate the above statement to the effect that grading in the Colony is not accepted as a, true test. They'.insist -upon uniformity of quality, and the absolute necessity of the Government giving every needful assistance to secure condition at the port of shipment and in transit.
