REVIVAL IN MINING.

ThU stir which now exists in ..the var - ious localities of the Thames Peninsula in Which gpldhas been discovered, is immediately caused by renewed activity in Working, by tbe accession of capital to adequately work the reefs, and by the realisation of the fact that we can noW profitably deal with large reefs which have hitherto been neglected, as they require extensive plants and particular methods of treatment. A return which we lately published showed that for the year ending on 31st of March last, there had boon an increase in the production of tbe Auckland goldfields to the value - of £42,095,. and this, although the Thames proper showed a decrease of L 33,310. The increase in Coromandel .was L45;406, and in the Ohinemuri County L30)699. We think we are not over the mark in estimating that the output of our goldfields for the last four weeks will reach a value Of L 34,000. Even if there were no increase on this amount this would be a yearly production of E 108,000. Wo anticipate, however, that the production will greatly exceed this, and may even be about twice as much. Preparations are being made for the extensive working, of a number of mines. These are not merely undeveloped pieces of ground, in which valuable reefs may or may not bo found. • In several cases they are proved mides, containing large bodies of quartz, and. Will give an ample return for the larger quantities which will. soon.be treated. At the important meeting held yesterday by the members of the Chamber of Commence,'at *’which several of the Auckland representatives were present, a resolution Was passed to the effect that the votes placed on the Estimates last session to aid in deep sinking, and which have hot been expended, should be renewed, and that Parliament should be asked to vote a sUin for the purpose of making tracks throughout the goldfields. The Chamber dealt with several other subjects, and the Hon Captain Morris reminded those present that the car eying out of .their wishes meant a new loan, which he could not consent to. The general Sentiment of those present was undoubtedly against further borrowing.. iiUt there is no question of this in what is proposed to do for goldfiolds. The vote for .deep sinking is made under certain conditions which will secure the expenditure of a considerable amount of private capital. As for tracks on the goldfields, these would demand only a moderate sum in any one year, and any special vote would only bo in aid of the expenditure of goldfields revenue. There surely should be no need to be squeamish in asking. The, government to be liberal in this matter seeing the extensive works they are carrying on on the Cheviot and ®ther estates, the experimenter farms in different parts, and the work they are giving in road making all over the South. Here are innumerable goldfields to be opened up on {Government land. The discovery of a single mine, of half the dimensions of the Waihi,| would directly and indirectly, recoup the Government for all its expenditure on the making of tracks. There should not be the least difficulty about this part of the programme of the Chamber of Commerce .---Herald.
