Selfe, an old resident who. is partially paralysed, was''charged with 'unlawfully wounding one, Partridge, by biting off a piece of his nose. From the evidence adduced, it appear .that the men were under the influence , of drink .in a private house. A quarrel took place between them, in the.course of which it was alleged, injuries were sustained, ” both mon being considerably knocked about and br,uiset!. The defence was that the accused, committed the act in self-defence, as owing to his affliction he could adopt no other moans of saving himself. The accused was committed for trial, bail being allowed, himself in £6O, and two sureties of £25. ■ **» i . ' , THE POPULATION OP THE COLONY. Wellington, Thursday. Davis had brought from the Itoslyn district for a grocer an emp ykg of beef to ..be filled at the brewery > He called back for it, but it was not ready. He called a second time, and;seeing the keg standing on the platform, cook it away, the celloyman being away at the time getting stamps. The grocer happeuea to call in, and he was given the stamp, but he did not affix it in the proper plate. It was pointed out that the firm had paid £7OOO yearly as beer duty, it was asked, would it be likely they. wqubl wilfully neglect putting .on a 2s 6d stamp. '
