THE FRENCH IN AFRICA. CONTINUED ADVANCE THE PROTEST OP ENGLAND IGNOEED London, May 5. News has been received that the French expedition, paying no attention to the protests of England, continued its advance, and claimed the right bank of the Niger, as far as Gurma.: THE ANNEXATION OP UMBEGESA. London, May 5. Mr Buxton, replying to a question respecting the protest of the Boers against the annexation of XTmbegesa, said the'serious state of affairs in that territory had compelled the Government to place it under the same administration as Zululand. The action of England did not arise from any ill-feeling against the Transvaal. The Convention of 1884 prevented the Boers from encroaching on the country.' ; - y ; THE WAR IN CUBA .'' - ' - ‘ Madrid, May 5. A FEARFUL TRAGEDY TRIPLE MURDER IN. MELBOURNE WIPE AND MOTHER-IN-LAW KILLED LODGER FATALLY INJURED ... Melbourne' Saturday. A FEARFUL tragedy occurred this morning at Collingwood, where Michael Dooley, a labourer, murdered his wife and mother-in-law,in the presence of his children, and inflicted a fatal injury on, a-lodger who attempted to interfere. The murderer has uufc yoc beon arrested. - ' Later. Later particulars of /the* Dooley tragedy show that Mrs Dooley was a hard-working woman. Her husband ill-treated her, and fearing her life was in danger, 6he obtained a warrant for his arrest, and it was the intention of the police to execute it this morning. Dooley, however, broke into the house with an. axe before daylight, and after gashing his wife with the axe, took her by the hair and cut .her throat. Six children, , huddled together in bed, were helpless witnesses of the tragedy. ' Dooley then went to the- mother-in-law’s rooih and dealt her a fearful blow with the axe, and afterwards nearly severed her head from the body with a razor. He then looted the house and took all the money he could find. Ob going outside he met Neale, a lodger in ther house, who was running for police assistance. Dooley struck him a terrific blow with the axe, fracturing his skull, but there are now some hopes of his recovery. Melbourne, May 6. • The Collingwood tragedy has ended as sensationally as. it began. , Whilst being hunted down by the police Dooley took arsenic and died shortly after his arrest had been effected. A letter was found in one of his pockets stating that be was, glad of what he had done,- and ! accusing; his wife of infidelity. Two of his . wife’s, children were not his and if he could have found their father he would have killed him also.. He regretted he had struck Neal. Dooley went to the theatre the evening after the tragedy was committed. ... ’ .. ; THE NICARAGUAN DIFFICULTY SETTLED. New York, May 5. The British marines have evacuated ,Corinto, and the Nicaraguan garrison has re-crossed the lagoon to the mainland, and resumed their provious stations. ’. As the British warships left the port they saluted the Nicaraguan flag.
