SUEYEY DISPUTE THE NATIVES IN EXPLANATION . NO FURTHER RESISTANCE .3 Auckland, Monday. The armed force arrived at Ruatohi last night, and found the natives in the centre of the settlement waiting thekorero. In reply to Inspector Hickson, the natives said they stopped the survey because they had not made application for the survey. Some of the speakers regarded the survey as the thin end of the wedge. Inspector Hickson explained that the survey was simply to define the block that the natives may bring applications for subdivision into the Land Court. .. ■■■■ - ,
Huri, a young chief, said- there. 1 would be trouble if the Government persisted, but generally the natives agreed not to offer further resistance, being contents to enter a strong protest. Inspector Hickson said the surveyors would recommence work this morning, and it must go through without .interruption.
FATAL ACCIDENT y
Dunedin, Monday. . Alfred William -Griffiths, flaxmill owner at Romahapa, was accidently killed this afternoon. One •of the pulleys on the main shaft flew to pieces. . * Griffiths was struck on the head, receiving fatal injuries.
A SERIOUS CHARGE
' . Dunedin, Monday. Two brothers, Ety. and Chas Parkes, were arrested at Seacliffe on a charge of raising sleepers on the rail way there on the 13fch inst. They wore brought up to-day, and remanded till the 30th.
