THOMPSON’S TRACK

(to the Edit or. )

Sir,—l have read Mr Herries* last effusion, and beg to say that I do not feel called upon to take notice of any of his silly challenges; they are no business of mine, any more than if he were to challenge me to prove that the. moon is made of green cheese. With respect to his challenge that I shall prove that he is well paid for advocating Thompsons track in the Council, I did not j*ay he was well paid, and he does . not ; say he is not paid, when he does I will answer hup.’ Suppose; for instance, I were to challenge Mr.Herries to prove—that before be was elected to the Council he did not go around and booze up the electors; that he did not tell some who declined to promise to vote for •him, that in the event of his election they would want something doing, and he would then remember where the votes caiiie from ; or, that when returning thanks in front of the Public Hall he did not promise to do all he could for Te Aroha; or, that sit was not he who .proposed to reduce the subsidy from tbe Council to the Te Aroha Town Board from £75 to £4O per annum; or that he attended the Council to vote for his own proposal; or, that the road from the Wairakau gate to his ownjdace is not in better condition than any/ other portion of the To Aroha-Liebfield road of the same length in the riding ; or; that he did not shout for some contractors after the last Council meeting, and boast that he had accomplished a great object that day, that he had been aiming at for some years; or, that- the-.attainment or that object will not .prevent, a goodly sum of money coming tfjrTe; Aroha annually, and be a serious loss to,a good many hard working-‘‘people. 'Were he to prove all these it would not prove his statement, which was the - cause of this corresjjondence to be true, nor would it prove him to be a better man than he ought to be.—l am, etc.,

James Mills.
