PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING.
The ordinal y monthly meeting of the Piako Connty Council was held in the Council Chambers, Morrinsville, on Thursday, the 11th inst Cr Chepmell chairman, and a full Council present. The minutes of previous meeting were read and approved. Correspondence was read and attended to.
A letter of thanks was sent to the Hon Cadman for’the grants given for roads at Waiorongomai. A letter was sent to the Minister of Miues protesting against the polution of the waters of the Thames river and its tributaries, by depositing tailings. Re Waiorongomai Tramway. — Mr Taylor wrote stating that he was doing nothing with the tramway, and left his case re payment of rent in the hands of the Council.
Mr Gavin sail that there had been 250 acres of land pegged out, and in the near future there will mean a considerable revenue to the Council Chairman moved that the Council allow the rent staud over tilPthe end of the current half-year, seconded by Cr Hunt find carried.
Cr Harrison asked if it was possible for the Council to give up the tram way.
Chairman said lie could not tell. Cr Harrison asked would the Government take it over on the co-opera-tive racket ? Cr Seddon moved and Cr Harrison seconded, that a committee consisting of the Chairman and Clerk be appointed to enquire into the position and power of the Council in connection with the Waiorongomai Tramway. From T. Devenport, re drain through his property to carry off water from the,road. Resolved that the work be done on the understanding that cost he paid by Mr Devenport Re change of name for Oxford. Resolvod that "the > name of Tiaran he submitted to the Government as a suitable name for Oxford. Resolved that in view of the decision given by Capt Jackson, of Hamilton, chat the Council do not press for the 10 per cent penalty on unpaid rates, and that, the money that has been collected be refunded.
Finance. —Credit, L 534 3s 4d; goldfield revenue brought to credit Ll. ■ From tha Tauranga County Council, Complaining of the bad state of the Katikati track.
Resolvod that specifications ,be prepared for repairs to tho Katikati track, for maintaining same in repair for twelve months.
County Valuer wrote asking for an increase in the price paid for valuing the Native Lauds. Resolved that the Council see no reason to deviate from the arrangements made.
Mr Voisey wrote asking for a dividing fence between bis section and the County reserve.
Resolved that steps be taken accordingly, Resolved that the work of opening drain near Mr J. McLeod Senr, be left to the Engineer to arrange.
Road Works. —Resolved that tho Engineer be instructed .to prepare specifications for metaling that portion of road between Te Aroha-Lichfield road and the Waiorongomai creamery, also for works on the Lichfield-Te Aroha road through Gordon Settlement.
Resolved that tenders be called for formation of Thames-Waikato road, near the Tatua Railway Station. For graveling Te Aroha-Lichfield road, near the Wairakau creek.
Tenders to be returnable on Saturday the 20th inst.
Piaico Bkidge.— Resolved that the necessary repairs be made to the Piako bridge, also to the Waitoa Bridge. Mr Herries stated that he had given notied to the Chairman and the Engineer that he would ask certain questions ro a charge against the Engineer. Cr Chepmell asked if Mr Ilerries had any charge to make. Cr Herries replied that he had none but Mr L’Grady had one. An opportunity was then given Mr O’Grady to make any charge. Mr O’Grady stated that he had given Ll to the Engineor as a bribe, for passing work on the Thames-Waikato road during December last. The Council then went into committee to consider the charge, ana after some discussion it was agreed that in the opinion of the Council the charge was not sustained. Accounts amounting to about L 250 were passed for paymeut.
