SHOOTING MATCH.
THAMES NAVALS v TE AROHA RIFLES. The long-looked-for return match with the Thames Navals took place at the range, Parawai, on Saturday last. Great interest was manifested in the contest by our local volunteers, and if the attendance on the range is a criterion to go by, the Thames folk are likewise deeply interested in these matches. The local team left here by one of Mr Gallagher’s brakes on Friday afternoon last, arriving at their destination about 10 o’clock the same evening, so as to have a rest before entering on the contest. The team put up at the Royal Hotel, and received every attention from the host, who did all in his power to make the stay an enjoyable one. The weather was not all ’that could be desired, being somewhat cloudy with variable light and wind. Both teams were in good form and did their best to score a win, and the result may fairly represent the ability of both the victorous team as well as their opponents. Although the Te Aroha team was defeated they have nothing to he ashamed of as the Thames Navals have always been considered a crack team.
The contest was a keen one and the finish exceedingly close and until the last men fired the result was uncertain. The Navals won by 30 points. The. following are the complete scores : Thames.
