DISTRESSING BOATING ACCIDENT Invercargill, Monday. ; Word has just been received of a dis tressing boating accident- at Stewart Island, an artist named Allen, his wife, and child being drowned. The only other occupant of the boat was a man numed Broadbent, a resident at Gore, who managed to reach the shore. The sheet had been made fast, and a puff of wind catching the sails capsized her. Mrs Allen' disappeared at; once, and Allen and his son sank after a. hard.struggle. Broadbent was rescued in an exhausted condition. Allen had purchased 170 acres, and j ust built a house, with the intention of permanently residing on the land. EIRE AT THE THAMES Thames, Monday. An incipient fire broke out last evening in an iron building, used as a workshop by the Thames .Gas Company, situated about 39 yards distant from the gas works. Fortunately, however, it was soon observed and an alarm given which was quickly responded to by the local fire brigade, and the flames were consequently confined to the stracture mentioned, the wood work of which was destroyed. The damage, however, is very trifling. The origin of the fire is not known. USE OF THE KNIFE • Wellington', Monday. On Saturday last, at Masterton, lady had her handbag snatched from her by a man, who decamped. The police made inquiries into the affair, and a constable came upon the man, who drew a knife and attempted to stab him. The constable avoided the blow, but the man managed to escape into the bush, and is still at large. DAIRY PRODUCE TRADE Ha wera, Monday r Mr Kowin, representative of Lovell and Christmas, produce merchants in London, taking his farewell on Saturday, expressed the belief that the prices of dairy paoduce would improve and that European countries could not long compete with the colonies in winter. It was also stated that the value of Taranaki dairy produce, this season, would exceed a quarter of a million.
