OHINEMURI.
(By our own Correspondent.)
Paeroa, Thursday. Last Tuesday was the biggest Warden’s Court that has ever yet been held, I may say, in the district. The following is a summary of the applications which were heard, 109 in. all : 6 Licensed holding granted; 15 adjourned; 1 special claim granted and 5 adj ourned; 7 water races granted and 4 adjourned; 1 machine site granted and 4 adjourned; 3 dams granted and 6 adjourned; 1 special site granted; 1 tramway 24 chains long, 2 serial tramways 1200 and 1650 feet long, and three special sites, all g a ited ; 10 residence sites granted and 12 adjourned; 1 business site granted; and 1 timber license granted. In addition to these, protection was given to the Komata G M. Co. for 6 months, permission was given: for the Wailii West Nos. 1,2, and 3 mines to be worked with 1 man for 4 months to J. Darrow; also to J. W. Walker to work the Grand Junction Nos. 1,2, and 3 with one man for 4 months. There were a few oases withdrawn.
The above is a good day’s work, bat it was all got through with by 1 p.m., 3 hours in all. The next Court day, on 12th March, will have a still larger number of applications, and some of them important ones. It was about time that Mr Jordan, the Warden’s Clerk, had some Clerical assistance, lam glad to see that John Jas. Erasmus has been appointed a cadet in the Warden’s office at Paeroa. He is no book-worm, being an unthusiastic in outdoor sports, and he will be greatly missed from the Cricket Club and Football Club of the Thames High School.
We have been having great changes among our business establishments, Mr Whitaker, who purchased Mr John Phillips’stock, is now selling it in a new shop built by Mr,, Hobson adjoining his own shop.
Mr Phillips senr. will re-open in the old premises to-morrow or the next day, with an entirety .new stock of goods, and. no doubt will get l ack nearly all his son’s old customers. Mr Hobson haslsold out his stock and r3nted the shop to a Mr Price, from Te Awamutu, who I believe takes possession to-morrow. Mr Hobson intends giving up business and going into farming..
Mr Bisney is moving his grocery and general business from Cassrels-street into a new shop on Normanby Hoad. Mrs J. W. Shaw is, I hear, contemplating giving up business as soon as she can find a purchaser.
A new stationers shop is, I believe, about to be started next door to the Tribune office. Jt would do better were it more centrally situated, somewhere about the centre between the two townships.
There is na doubt about it that the population is increasing in the direction ol the Hail way line, as there are a number, of new cottages being now erected in the freehold township, while others will be shortly. There is a rumour afloat, but for which I cannot vouch, that there is a probabhty of the wharf not being close to the Pailway bridge as at present believed, but either at the Junction or Fuke. 1< or my own part I would like to see the wharf at the Junction, as steamers can always come up as far as that, and were it up at the Railway bri ge there would be the same trouble as a. pi esent, necessitating the steamer leaving an hour or so before the time Zn passengers at the Juncf\r 8 unc tion road, too, only needs metalhng to ma)M it a flM ’ th f ro .. , ’ ‘j would not be long More In'?? ° OU 1 1)3 built all the way down on either side, J
