OHINEMURI NOTES

(By our own Correspondent.) Paeroa, Thursday. In my last I mentioned that there was a talk of Mr J. M. Coote retiring from business, but I am glad to say that there is no present likelihood of his leaving the Commercial Hotel. Both he and Mrs Coote would be*, much missed were they to leave Paeroa The successful tenderer for Mr Phillip’s bankrupt stock was a Mr A. J. Whittaker, of Hawera, at 8s 9d in the £. This is considered a low figure. He is holding a sale in the old premises for a few days, and meanwhile Mr John Robson is erecting a new shop for him on Normanby road, between his own premises and Mr Claxton’s tailor shop, where Mr Whittaker will remain for probably 2 or 3 months.

Mr Bisinly, who has been carrying on business as a grocer on Cassrelsstreet, fronting the river (once the main street of Faeroa, but now called by some the back street), has, I hear, leased a new shop just built by Mr J. Barrett, adjoining his butcher shop on Normanby road. With a main street shop, Mr Bisinly should do even better thaDjhoj^-^^^i.fc^ag^,. It is a wonder thatagood Btore has

( not been started in the Vicinity of the j Royal Mail Hotel, on Belmont Road | somewhere, as the population of that I township is now fully as large as in the other township, if indeed not larger, and is steadily increasing, Iji, is a long distance to have to go wthe other shops, especially in the winter, and I am confident that were such a store started at which groceries, stationery, etc. (not drapery) could be got, it would be a success. As yet, work on the Railway Bridge has not been commenced, but will be veiy shortly. The bridge will be 220 feet in length, having in all 7 spans, viz., 1 of 60 feet, 2 of 40 feet each, and 4 of 20 feet each. Cassrels and Bonnet’s old Hall is, as I said before, being re-constructed; new flooring, new walls, new roof, in fact nearly all new. The present size is 60 feet long by 42 feet wide, but there will be an additional 26 feit in length, built on for stage, so when completed it will be 86 feet long- by 42 feet wide.

Just as we were all crying out for rain to fill our tanks which were empty, and the farmer also praying for rain, down it earn©, commencing on M onday Inor-niiig 'witli' fi*'fine steady rain, it continued all night, poured hard on Tuesday until we had more than we wanted. The roads are as muddy as ever, and the dray traffic to the upper districts is seriously impeded. Still the rain has done a lot of good, and will help to make the roads better, now that they are being metalled right through from Paeroa to Waihi. The County Council meet to-day, (Thursday) when five tenders for work will be opened. Pour of these afe for roads and drains in'the Waitoa district, on which there will be an expentiture of about £2OO. The fifth contract to be let is ft r 1500 yards of rubble for the road through the Waihi township. At the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, the following tenders were received:—Contract No. 24. Supplying and carting 1500 yards of rubble in Waihi township. Trainer, £2OO ; Bern, £222 ; Moon, £225. Contract No 29. Reforming and filling Otways road, Waihou Bossons, L 22; McCormick, R2l; Bew, LlB 2s 6d; Thompson, L27 r s9s; Contract No. 30.
