LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Capt. Edwin wired at 2.22 p.m. yesterday as follows:—“ Wind from North-east to North and West; glass fall.” Mr J. N. Coutts, watchmaker and- jeweller, of Paeroa, will be at Te Aroha next Wednesday, and may bo seen on all kinds of work and repairs at Mr Smardon’s, Palace Hotel.—Advt.

Mr Pavitt, Returning Officer for the Te Aroha Riding in the Piako County Council, has a public notice elsewhere, to the effect that Mr Herries being the only one nominated, to fill the vacancy on the Council, caused by the resignation of Mr P. GageBrown, that gentleman has been returned. We are pleased to note the Te Aroha West and Waihou creameries are still forging ahead, and that the amount being sent is still, keeping up. The much vexed question with regard to the accuracy or otherwise of the Babcock tester is on the wane, and the suppliers are. once more working in harmony with Reynolds and Co. A notice "appears in another column intimating that the Te Aroha Brass Band intend holding another concert on the 21st of next month. The progress of the Band has frequently been noticedun our columns, they are now in need of funds and appeal to the public for support. No doubt they will be well patronized. Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R., expects that the negotiations for the lease of the ironsand beach at New Plymouth will' shortly be successful, in which case he intends to form a Company with sixty thousand pounds capital to purchase the Onehunga works, and remove them to New Plymouth. Mr W. Dibsell, storekeeper, baker, etc., Te Aroha, has a uew advertisement in this issue, proclaiming that he is holding a cash sale of all kinds of the very best groceries Mr Dibsell has' been in business in this district since the opening of the field, and is well known by the inhabitants for the really first-class article which is always to be obtained at his store.

Messrs McNicol and Co.’s sale at Waihou on Wednesday last was well attended, and resulted in satisfaction being given to all concerned. In another column will be found a list of the forthcoming salea of this firm to which we draw the attention of our readers.

Miss Forbes is now at To Aroha glvln lessons in the “Excelsior” system of dre33 cutting, making, etc. Dressmakers an ladies that would like either themselves or their daughters to learn how to cut and make perfect fitting dresses without any fitting on, in so short a time as six or seven lessons should not miss this opportunity. As Miss Forbes’ stay here will be short, int ncing pupils are requested to apply at once. Miss Forbes may be consulted at the Palace Hotel Sample Rooms. Hours 2pm ti 15. Evening lessons by arrangement. A general meeting of the T.A.J. Club was held on Wednesday night, 23rd inst., in the Secretary’s office The following members were present: Mr Pavitt, (in the chair), Messrs Parr, Haslett, Lucas, Mills, Smardon, McKay,, Bradley, and Gallagher. The question of leasing the racecourse to Mr Parr was brought forward, and after considerable discussion it was resolved that the matter stand over till after the race meeting. It was resolved that the annual races .be held on Wednesday, March 13th, 1895. A good programme was arranged, and will he advertised in a few days. Several other small matters were arranged. Judging by the ehthusian shown at the committee meeting, a good days sport may be looked forward to.

Our telegraphic news in this issue contains a statement to the effect that the Government are willing to give a bonus of ,£IOOO for theffirst 200 tons of cyanide manufactured in New Zealand. The power of this material in unlocking the immense stores of gold contained in our low grade ores has been repeatedly brought before the notice of the public lately. It has proved itself invaluable to many of the mines in the Ohinemuri goldfield, which otherwise would not have proved remunerative. We have not the slightest doubt but that a company will he formed for the manufacture of cyanide of potassium and will be taken up in this colony, and that ere long numbers will be putting in a claim for the bonus offered. r '■
