HEROIC CONDUCT OF A LAD

f Napieb, Thursday ' Aj sad drowning accident occurred to-day. ; A party of of the Tutaekuri E ver. Three of them-Myra Cunningham, Ella MeYay, and Buth Foster- —went in to bathe. Soon Miss Cunningham got out of her depth, and Miss MeYay went to her assistance, but herself got into trouble. Miss Foster, went after Miss McVay, but finding that she was also getting beyond her depth, turned, and just managed to reach the shore in an exhausted condition. Her cries had called the attention of some lads, one of whom, Frank Glover, went to the assistance of the other young ladies. He managed, at great risk to himself, to save Miss MeYay, who struggled wildly, and Glover might have been drowned had not another boy named , , Fred Smith gone to his assistance. Miss Cunningham was drowned, her "body not being recovered for an hour and a-half afterwards. She was the daughter farmer anirunholder of Laburn, near Bangiora and Pohui, Hawke’s Bay. Glover has been recommended for the Eoyai Humane Society’s medal. FATAL ACCIDENT AT M ATJNTJ. Whangabei, Thursday, An accident occurred at Maunu yesterday, which eventually proved fatal. Joseph Edge andßobert Cleary were felling a puriri tree on the property of the latter at Maunu. Whilst the tree was falling, Edge got caught in some I undergrowth, and before he could get out of the way, the tree fell on him, pinning him to the ground face downwards. It took over two hours to remove the tree, with the labour of six men, the tree having to bo sawn through,- and then jacked off with great difficulty. Drs. Hall and Smith were summoned, and found that a leg was broken, but'otherwise iTeYM’imT seem much hurt, except that ho was very much shaken. He however, died at six o’clock yesterday evening. Deceased leaues a wife and six children to morn their loss- At the inquest today a verdict of accidental death was i returned.
