THE AUSTRALIAN GALES.
FATALITY AT SEA. The gales prevailing on the East Australian coast during the early part of last week aro reported as exceedingly fierce and dangerous. Several vessels had narrow escapes from going to pieces on a lee shore. In the height of a gale on Sunday week Capt. K. Aliicek was lost overboard from his steamer, the Australia, bound from Sydney to the Clarence River. lie was one of the most favourably known masters in the coastal trade. At Lite breakfast hour i;c was missed, and though ho had partaken of the early cofice, no one heard a cry or saw him disappear from his post during the dreadful weather prevailing at the time. In shipping circles in Sydney the netvs was received with profound regret. Captain Affleck had won his t purs in MessWt John See and Company’s employ. Many yeaTs ago he was beforo the mast in titeir schooner the Adieu; and gradually he wtM> promoted to the Australia
