Obiter Dicta of Mr Gladstone.
The obiter dicta of great men are always worth preserving, not least so when they differ from commonly received opinions. Here aro a few of Mr Gladstone’s :
Lord Benconsfield was the ino6fc interesting political character of this century, not excepting Mr Pitt. Tho elder Lord Lytton was one of the most high-minded and most honourable men in public life. Lord Melbourne was remarkable for the conscientious discharge, of his duty towards the Crown nnd towards his colleagues. There was one Homer, and ho wrote all the Iliad and all tho Odyssey. Sir Walter Scott’s best two novels are * Kenilworth ’ and ‘ The Bride of Lammermoor.’
The marriages in George Eiiot’s novels arc outragos on sentiment.
Tho three handsomest men of their time were the late Duke of Hamilton, Sidney Herbert, nnd Cardinal Manning ; the three most naturally eloquent speakers of their day the Duke of Argyll, the late Lord Elgin and Bishop YVilberforce.
