(Signed) J. H. A- MacDonald, F, A, MAuiNpiN, Major, R,E,

April 25,

The following from an exchange in reference. to English amateur cricketers is interesting : It is said that Mr W. W. Read,-tho 4 amateur ’ player, is employed by the county as an assistant secretary, although Mr Aleock receives the considerable smu of £4OO a year for his services. This is enough in all conscience ! Mr Read is also paid £l5O, and the cost of his season ticket from homo, another £26. In the last two years he has received a grant of £IOO, whilst George Lohmann only got £SO, and the other professionals £l6O, and the year before £l2O between them. Thus it is evident iE you play as a gentleman your services are twice as valuable as if you play as a professional. What do you say about it, Dr. W. G. Grace? You know something about the ‘expenses’ amateurs receive.” At the Eastern Suburbs Sports Kellet.t beat Cufl in the Long Jump, doing 19ft. lOin. to 19ft. 4in. Poulsen, late of Auckland, got second in the half-mile, having 80yds sbarr. Peter Wood, of Christchurch, won the Quarter with 18yds from McPherson after a grand race with the latter in 52 2-sth see. The correspondent of the 44 New Zealand Referee,” who went over with our athletes to Sydney, says “ I should say the £l3O collected in New Zealand to defray ( the expenses of the team to tho New South I Wale 3 Championshi p M eeting wil! have been [ more than enough to defray all expenses, and probably when the balftnee-sheot is published we shall see that it leaves a decent balance to be carried forward.” This speaks hopefully for the management. On May 10th, at the Stanley B.C. Sports, England, E. Leitch, in the Mile Safety Race, did a splendid performance in his heat, covering the distance in 2min 344-sth sec, which beats the record by 1 2-sth sec. Howell, the famous English professional, defeated A. H Robb in a ten-mile match for £SO, on April 19th, winning by three yards in 30min 25£sec. A week later Howell was defeated in a fifteen-mile race for £25 by R. H. English, wko won by a foot in 50min 33 4-sth sec.

R. B. Lusk has obtained employment inn legal office in Sydney, and will t herefore not be seen in Aueklnnd football circles for 6ome time. He will play for the Stratblicld Club, to which Braddon belongs. Now, Auckland full-backs, gird up your loins. If you can only become as good men as Lusk was, wo shall have something for which to thank yon.
