NEWS FROM THE ISLANDS
The French mail steamer Tanais arrived in Port Jackson yesterday morning from Noumea, bringing 72 passengers, the majority of whom were transshipped to the steamer Salazie, which sailed henco in the forenoon for France. The Tanais left Noumea on the 20th. Matters at the Islands were quiet. H.M.s. Lizard, attached to the Australian station, arrived at Noumea on the 18th inst. from the New Hebrides and was to remain in port for the national fete, which takes place on July 14th. The Lizard had made a cruise through the New Hebrides and found things quiet. She reported having left H.M.s. Royalist and the French cruiser Saone at Port Havannah on the 15th inst. The French warship Vi re arrived at Noumea on the 20th inst. from Tahiti. News comes by the Tanais of thearrival at Noumea of bheFrenchschooner Mary Anderson, a vessel recently fitted out at New Caledonia for a labour-recruiting voyage. Her trip had not been a success. This was owing to some trouble between the Government agent and the captain. The result of this disagreement was that the vessel was ordered back to Noumea with only 23 recruits on board. The Mary Anderson in the course of her cruise touched at Tanna, Erromango, Port Sandwich, Api, Paama, Ambryrn, Mallicollo and Aoba.— “ Sydney Telegraph.”
