COLD AT PUHIPUHI.
OVER 50ZS. GOLD TO THE TON.
We stated last issue, says the “ Northern Advocate,” that we had paid a visit to the Caledonian ground, and we brought in some of the mysterious-looking brown ferruginous ore in which not a speck of gold could be seen. The ore caused a good deal of interest in Whangarei, and many of those professing to know something of mining, asserted that such stuff could not carry gold. However, we treated it chemically and found that, notwithstanding its unlikely appearance, it was more than ordinarily rich in the precious metal, and we decided to send half the piece so tested away for assay, and the following from Mr Jas. Napier, who is in charge of the Waiorongomai Reduction Works, and is considered one of the leading expert metallurgists in these colonies, finally establishes the richness in gold of the Caledonian lode :—“ Waiorongomai, June 26, 1890. G. E. Alderton, Whangarei. Stone containsfive anda-quarterounces gold and 12 ounces silver.— James Napier.” The stone above referred to was taken out of the winze by Mr Alderton and sent by him direct to Waiorongomai. It was not picked, for the reason that the ore shows no gold, and no ono could possibly make any selection of it. It is a ferruginous or iron stone, something like hematite’ in appearance, of a yellowish-brown colour.
