Lord Salisbury, in reply to Lord Rosebery, said that naval experts were favourable bo the cession of Heligoland. Members of the London police force claim the right to retire after twenty-five years’ service, with a pension equal to two-thirds of their pay. In the House of Commons the local taxation proposals were only carried by a majority of four. Mr W. H. Smith declares it was a snatch vote.
Stanley declares that Lord Salisbury has added half-a-million square miles of territory, to the Empire, with immense possibilities of extension in the future.
