The Chinese Tea Trade.
It is little wonder if China is getting alarmed about the decline in her tea trade. A decrease during the last three years of over 40 per cent, in the exports to England alone is surely enough to startle even Chinese statesmen. But there is worse behind. Russia is preparing for her own supply by planting tea on the southern slopes of the Caucasus. Portugal is now beginning to get tea from the Azores, where the plant has been thoroughly acclimatised. These are now competitors. India is an old-established one, and through her abundance China is not likely to recover lost ground in the English market. China, however, shows fight, and has begun prenarations for a retaliation which is alarming the cotton interest of India. An order has been placed from Canton for a thousand looms and other plant, at a total cost of near £85,000., and iu is expected that by next winter the cotton industry will be iq full swing in China.
