THE TRUE HERO.
Lot others write of battles fought, Of bloody, ghastly fields, Where honour greets the man who wins, And death the-inamvho yields ; But I will write of him who fighls, And vanquishes bis sins, Who struggles on through weary years Against himself, und wins. He is a hero staunch and brave, Who fights an unseen foe, And puts at last beneath bis feet. Ilis passions base and low ; Who stands erect in manhood’s might, Undaunted, undismayed— The bravest man who drew a sword In foray, or in raid. It calls for something more than brawn, Or muscle to o’ereome An enemy who marches not With banner, plume and drum— A foe for ever lurking nigh, With silent, stealthy tread ; Forever near your board by day, At night beside your bed. All honour, then, to that brave heart 1 Though poor or rich lie be, Who struggles with his better part— Who conquers and is free. He may not wear a hero’s crown, Nor fill a hero’s grave, But truth will place his name among The bravest of the brave. Fancy the directors of a public company submitting for approval a balance-sheet showing an error of LI 1,000! The affair lias been treated in a very caustic manner by the Melbourne press. There certainly does appea*' to be an absolute necessity' for legislation in order to define the duties of auditors.
The spirit of the age has resolved it elf into “ time-payment." A man lms a time-payment landed estate (30xf0, £5 down), and erects on it a time-payment mansion. lie fills it with time-p; ymen' furniture, not omitting a time. p;\men piano and time-payment sewing machine. I am anxiously awaiting the announcement of the time payment tooth-brush ? nd th" time-payment potato.—jEedos.
