PUBLIC SCHOOL DRAWING.
EXAMINER’S REPORT. MrE. W. Payton, master of the Elam School of Art, has sent in to the Auckland Society of Arts his report on the late drawing competition in the public schools. Mr Payton was the examiner. In all there were 931 drawings sent in, and 125 passed for certifiCtlijCft* The best half-dozen are reported on as follows by Mr Payton : George Harold Bycroft, Ngaruawahia, Ist prize, excellent. Willie Naughton, Kaukapakapa I Katie Kingsford, Devonport f William Logan, Devonport / Good. Nellie Edmiston, Newton East I Joshua Hutchinson, Harrisville ' “ An excellent work by George Harold Bycroft, of Ngaruawahia (considerably beyond all the others in merit), takes Ist prize, but I find it difficult to separate the next five, as they are very equal, and should prefer to class them all together, and > award each a prize, if this can be arranged.” The following statistics are given regarding the number of competitors :
Speaking generally of the drawings, the examiner says that the attention of the Board of Education should be drawn to two faults of which the competitors were guilty. The lirst is the very bad idea the pupils generally have of how to commence the drawing ; the second, the use of dotted lines . _ “The first implies wantof instruction in that particular point—a very important one ; the second suggests a wrong method of instruction. The use of dotted lines in a drawing is at once clumsy, tedious, and unnecessary.”
