DEFINITION OF A HOUSEHOLDER.

Tjik following definition of a householder tinder the Education Act, appeared in n recent i sue of the Otago Witness, and we insert it for general information : “A son living in his father’s house is not a householder, and cannot legally vote or he elected. There seems to be a very general misapprehension on the subject, and we noticed lately that it was authoritatively stated that any person who uses a house is a householder, hut tin’s is quite wrong. If this were correct, it would he impossible to exclude any' person. The words of the Act are “ householders means every adult male or female person, who, * as owner, lessee, or occupier, uses or resides’ in any dwelling house, shop, warehouse, or other building in the distrh t.' Jn the case you mention it is the father that ‘ occupies ’ the house, and although the son resides in the house, he does not reside in it either as _ owner, lessee, or occupier. The occupier of a house is the person entitled to the ‘ exclusive occupation.’ In the case, for instance, of an adult son living in his mother’s house, it is the mother, and not the son, that would he entitled to vote. "We have entered into a full explanation of this subject, because the question is so often asked.”
