THE S.S. MORAYSHIRE.
A NEW CARGO STEAMER
Tiies.s. Morayshire, the latest addition to the Shire line of steamers trading between London and New lately arrived at Dunedin from Home on her maiden trip. She is a fine substantial steel vessel of 2,481 tons net. register, gross tonnage 3,822, dead weight capacity 5,300 tons. The Morayshire, which came out from Barrow, via Las Palmas and Melbourne, was built by Messrs Hawthorn, Leslie, and Co., of Newcasble-on-Tyne, in 1889. She is straight stemmed with an elliptic stern and brig rigged. Her hull is constructed of the best mild steel on the well-deck principle, divided by bulkheads into eight watertight compartments. The arrangements on board are so extensive and complete that it is expected she will carry 60,000 carcases mutton in the cold air chambers. This result is obtained by placing the refrigerating machinery forward on the main deck instead of having it contiguous to the engine-room. The Morayshire has an un. usually long forecastle head, and under this is the engine-room, set apart specially for the refrigerating machinery. The motive power for driving this machinery is supplied by a third boiler in the engineroom, and the steam is led along in pipes fixed under the mainrail to the forecastle, where, as already stated, the refrigerating machinery is housed. There are two engines capable of freezing 80,000 cubic feet of air per hour. Both engines can be worked at once, or separately, if need be. They are known as Lightfoob’s patent, and are of extra freezing power., Two special engineers are retained for the working of the refrigerating machinery. Although built for cargo purposes, the passenger accommodation has not been neglected, there being a commodious and very elegantly appointed saloon. This i 3 entered from a spacious companion-way in a large deckhouse aft, and there is berthing accommodation for 50 passengers. Her rate of speed is about 12 knots.
