AUCKLAND WINTER MEETING.
The Winter Meeting of the Auckland Racing Club comes off at Ellerslie on Saturday next. Last night the acceptances and general entries for the gathering fell due. The list shows a great weeding out in the Great Northern Steeplechase, but nevertheless the eight left in will provide the material for a good race. Kangaroo is on his way here from Wellington, and I hear Auckland and Jenny will arrive during the forthcoming week. My present fancy for the Hurdles is Donald, but Jenny will require a lot of beating, and those I like best in the Steeplechase are Auckland, Orangeman, and Orlando. There will bo plenty of time next week to make a more definite selection. The following are the accept- 1 ances and entries i
Maiden Steeplechase. oC SOsovs, about two miles and a-lialf. Neck-or-Nothiny. Decision, Jim.Hunc. he Banker, Flying Dutchman, Blue Peter, Dick Turpin, Resolution. Winter Oats Handicap, of 80sovs, one mile and a distance. Vendor, Tamo a. Blarney, Rataplan, Fiesole, Lcorina, To •- ooti. Nigger, Prudence, Riot, Torment, St. Michael. Selling Steeplechase, of 70sovs, about three miles.—Tawhiao. nil; Silvio, 40sovs ; Jim, nil; Falcon, 20sovs; Hune, lOOsovs ; Tairoa, nil; Orlando, 40sovs. L •, dies’ Bracelet, of lOsovs, one mile. Vendor, Rataplan. Fiesole, Leorina, Operatic, Te Kooti, Nigger, Yum-yum, Donald, Torment, St. Michael. THE NEW ZEALAND STUD COMPANY. No fresh light has yet been thrown on tiie future of the New Zealand Stud Company. It is likely the establishment will be carried on as at present till the return of Major George from England. lam told the stallions and mares are valued at £13,000, and they could be purchased by a company at that figure, but ot course that doe 3 not include the land. THE EPSOM DERBY. Next Wednesday, the 111th contest for the Epsom Derby will take place. This year the conditions of the time-honoured classic race have been changed, and they now read : “ Derby Stakes, of £5,000 for the winner, £SOO for the nominator of winner, £3OO for owner of second, and £2OO for owner of third ; colts, 9st; fillies, Bst. 91b ; for 3-year-okls -. by subscription of £SO each, it. ft. if declared by the first Tuesday in January, 1890, and £lO only if declared by the first Tuesday in January, 1889; any surplus to be paid to winner; about one mile four furlongs, starting at the High Level starting post. 237 subs., 63 of whom paid £lO each.” In addition to the change of conditions, the contest will be notable for Australia being representated for the first time, but it is quite evident that the Hon. J. White’s laudable ambition of endeavouring to win tho race with a colt of his own breeding will not be realised this year. Surefoot, the Two Thousand Guineas winner, is still favourite for the race, and as he has no end of “past form” to recommend him, he will probably turn out the winner.
