CLERICAL SCANDAL
ACCUSATION AGAINST A MINISTER, LETTER FROM THE CLERGYMAN AT AUCKLAND. A (UJJLKGKAM received from Sydney a few days since and published in the St.\:p v stated that a painful scandal had beep disclosed there, A leading Presbyterian minister, a,r.,d formerly a modera--ojf body, it was asserted, had been accused of having been guilty of too intimate relations with a lady member of hia congregation. The message further stated that as one outcome of the scandal, divorce proceedings were instituted, and some interesting developments were anticipated, Tho matter was in due course brought before the Presbytery of New South Wales, and we learn by oable to-day that the reverend gentleman, whose name is given as Gardner, was called upon to return forthwith and answer the charges preferred against him. Gardner was supposed to have joined the Alameda at Auckland and gone on toSan Francisco,but it now appeal’s to be doubtful whether he has yet taken his departure from this city, to-day’s cablegram stating that tho accused wrote to the Presbytery from Auckland resigning his position as a member of that body.
