An Artificial Blush.

The invention of an ‘artificial blush’ is said to be the latest triumph of chemical science. That the rouge pot is capable of imparting more or less permanent signs of modesty to the feminine cheek is a calumny which still remains unrefuted. But the ingenious individual who has introduced this new chemical blush warrants it to be of an entirely different character. It can be laid on the face half an hour or so before it is required to ‘ act,’ and can be arranged so as to ‘ come off,’ like the clapper of an alarum clock, just at the right moment. If, for example, the susceptible young man is expected to propose between the second and third dance, tho blush is timed to appear punctually, at that hour. Or if the bashful poet looks to be complimented on the last epic just before he takes the hostess down to dinner, a good working blush may be set —for, say,. 8.20 p.m. The only difficulty appears to be that the cause and effect may nob manage to hit the nick of time. The author may be suffused with crimson just at the very moment when he wishes to be pale and interesting, and the passe beauty ‘ simply shocking ’ at the crisis when she would wish to look her best. What would happen if the proprietress of the mechanical blush displayed no emotion, and the bard, despite the joy which filled his breast, had to glare brazen-faced at the carpet ?
