THE MARITIME COUNCIL.
Wellington, May 10. The Maritime Council received a cable from the National Labour Association of Queensland, asking support in a dispute which has arisen over the employment of non-Union shearers by certain squatters. The secretary was instructed to cable for full particulars regarding the dispute, and when the Council receives these the matter will be considered. A discussion took place on the Petone Woollen Mill difficulty, and the Council expressed regret at the fact that it had been found necessary to employ solicitors in order to effect a settlement. The consideration of this question was also deferred till a full board was present. The ruies of the Wharf Labourers’ Union, which had been drawn up at the conference held recently at Dunedin, were considered and agreed to, with a few minor alterations. A new rule, to regulate the employment of casual labour in all railway sheds and on railway trucks on wharves, was also submitted, and was approved of by the Council. This rule is for the purpose of preventing other than members of the Union being granted casual employment in sheds and on trucks. A deputation from the Council will wait on the Railway Commissioners next week, and lay this question before them, with the view of gaining their support in putting the resolution in force when required. The Trades and Labour Council have decided to afford all possible assistance to the Christchurch Typographical Society in the dispute with Messrs YVhitcombe and Tombs and their employees. The iron works assistants have informed their employers that they will not work with non-union men after the 15th inst. At this morning’s sitting of the Maritime Council, the 28th October of each year was fixed upon as the anniversary day on which the labour demonstrations will be held in the various parts of the colony. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the Government, bringing under their notice any alterations which the Council considered desirable in several of the Acts relating to labour.
